Setting Goals - A Waste of Time or A Necessary Evil??

Sometimes just the way we look at things or what we call them conjures up certain images in our minds. If thinking about setting goals makes you uneasy or you think of it as a waste of time, maybe thinking of it as just another “to-do” list will ease the tension we all feel. We all make lists for our everyday chores, etc., but fail to make the “big list” that can make or break our financial security.

Sometimes just jotting down a few notes with no particular rhyme or reason will get you started. Any kind of action is better than no action.

Everyone will have their own particular way of setting goals, but once you see even the smallest improvement it will become almost addictive.

Here are 5 ways to help you get started.

1. Write it down. Whether it’s just one thing or you brainstorm and get fifty, for some reason your brain will consider it differently if you write it down.

2. Make a schedule. Put a time or date beside each item. Don’t worry if it’s totally off to begin with, you can modify it as you get more accustomed to accomplishing things on a set schedule.

3. Focus. Keep in mind that you must accomplish something on your list each day. If it’s too large a project for one day, break it up into smaller increments so you do something every day.

4. Give yourself 5 minutes at the end of the day. Take 5 minutes to write your list for the next day. It may take a few minutes longer at first, but with practice you’ll get it down to a science.

5. Quit! After your long day, give yourself permission to forget about work and just relax for a little bit. You won’t have to keep thinking about what you’re going to do tomorrow because you will have your list ready and waiting!

Setting goals doesn’t have to be a chore. It will make your life incredibly easier and exhilarating once you start to see it work.
