12 Tips For Saving Money on Your Grocery Bill

1. STICK TO YOUR SHOPPING LIST! When shopping, never ever buy on impulse. Never buy items in the checkout aisle. They are placed there to tempt you and can really add up.

2. ALWAYS buy milk (and juices) in larger containers (gallon or ½ gallon). They will always cost less than the quarts and pints. Always stay away from the “24-hour” convenience stores. You are paying for that convenience. Their prices are nearly always higher than your supermarket. BUY in-season fruits and vegetables. They are tastier (and more nutritious) than frozen or canned and often cheaper.

3. BUY HEALTHIER FOODS. Fresh fruits such as apples, pears, and plums (and fresh vegetables such as carrots, tomatoes, and celery) cost about the same as cookies, candy bars, and donuts. So why buy the foods that are so bad for you. Try to make healthier food choices and your body will thank you for it.

4. TRY the store brands. The costly name brand products are usually placed at eye-level, so to find the store branded products you will have to look either lower or higher on the shelves. The store brands are cheaper and often taste the same as their higher priced name brand products.

5. CHECK OUT the price differences between brands. Look for sales like the ones that have a buy one get one free offer.

6. COMPARE unit prices in similar foods. The unit price will tell you the price per ounce, pound, pint or other measurement. This will allow you to compare prices and see if the larger size item is really a bargain. Sometimes it isn’t. So beware.

7. LOOK carefully at produce prices. Reduced price items may or may not be a bargain. Some fruits and vegetables can be added to other items in a recipe even though their outside appearance is not the best (may be slightly bruised, etc.). Never buy items that have an off odor or slick or slimy appearance.

8. STOCK UP on sale items that you can put in your pantry. Items with longer shelf lives like canned soup and spaghetti sauce can make a quick dinner or lunch if they are kept on hand.

9. CHECK OUT expiration dates. A sale item is no bargain if you won’t be using it before it expires.

10. BUY whole chickens. You can cut it into pieces at home. Pre-cut chicken always cost more. You can even try baking the whole chicken like a turkey for a new family treat.

11. BUY in-season fruits and vegetables. They are tastier (and more nutritious) than frozen or canned and often cheaper.

12. DON’T get tricked by marketing. Items placed at the end of the aisles are come-ons. They may not be cheaper than items placed further down the aisles.
